For me, truffle hunting is much more than a hobby. It is a passion that combines experiencing nature, culinary fascination and the close partnership with my dogs in a truly unique way.

Training and working together with my dogs is at the heart of everything. Their incredible sense of smell, combined with the close bond we share, makes every search a special experience.

Together, we travel through and explore different countries in search of hidden treasures beneath the ground. Every region has its own characteristics, from different soils and climates to different varieties of truffles. Every trip brings a new adventure.

Whether in the beautiful hills of France, neighbouring countries such as Switzerland, Belgium and the Netherlands, or new and lesser known truffle regions, our goal always remains the same. To explore together while respecting and enjoying nature.

For us, truffle hunting is not only about culinary pleasure. It is also about slowing down, being mindful and meeting people from different countries who share the same passion.

Both Maple and Armani successfully earned their Working Dog Certificate at the working trial in France, achieving an Excellent rating.

Armani also achieved 1st place in the combined ranking, and we were delighted to take home a Golden Truffle Trophy from France.

Varieties & Flavor

There are many different types of truffles, each differing in appearance, flavour and aroma. The best known and most highly prized varieties include the white Alba truffle (Tuber magnatum Pico) and the black Périgord truffle (Tuber melanosporum Vitt.). Other important varieties include the Burgundy truffle (Tuber aestivum var. uncinatum), the summer truffle (Tuber aestivum), the winter truffle (Tuber brumale) and the Bianchetto truffle (Tuber borchii).

Here is a more detailed overview of some of the most important truffle varieties.

White Truffles

Alba Truffle (Tuber magnatum Pico)

Also known as the Piedmont truffle, this is one of the most expensive and highly sought after truffle varieties. It has a strong, distinctive aroma with notes reminiscent of garlic and is often shaved raw over dishes.

Black Truffles

Périgord Truffle (Tuber melanosporum Vitt.)

Also known as the black winter truffle, it takes its name from the Périgord region of France. It has an intense, earthy aroma and is considered a delicacy in French cuisine.

Summer Truffle (Tuber aestivum)

This variety has a milder flavour than the Périgord truffle and is typically harvested during the summer months.

Burgundy Truffle (Tuber aestivum var. uncinatum)

The Burgundy truffle is closely related to the summer truffle and generally has a somewhat stronger and more distinctive aroma.

Winter Truffle (Tuber brumale)

Another variety of black truffle, the winter truffle has a somewhat milder flavour than the Périgord truffle.

Bianchetto Truffle (Tuber borchii)

Also known as the spring truffle or March truffle, it has a less intense flavour than the Alba truffle and is often used in a variety of dishes.

Early Introduction to Truffles with Real Truffle Experience from the Very Beginning

Our puppies are introduced to the scent of real truffles in a playful way from around four weeks of age. They are given the opportunity to explore, sniff and play with real truffles, creating their first positive experiences with this special scent.

This early and gentle introduction lays an important foundation for their future training as truffle dogs. The earlier they associate the distinctive scent with something positive, the more naturally and enthusiastically they can develop their skills later on.

We continue to support our puppy families even after the puppies have moved into their new homes. We regularly offer truffle training sessions where we provide practical guidance on how to develop and strengthen their truffle searching skills.

This question cannot be answered without some explanation.


  • It is important to distinguish between the meanings of "Truffle":
  • Hypogeae, which includes all fungi that fruit underground.
  • Tuber (literally translated as "truffle"), which represents a single genus of hypogeous fungi.
  • For the sake of completeness, it should also be mentioned that there are many species within the genus TUBER, such as... Tuber aestivum (summer truffle).


    • In the Federal Species Protection Ordinance Truffles (hypogees) of the genus Tuber are strictly protected. This means that all Tuber species may not be collected. Searching for and finding them is not prohibited.
      The lower nature conservation authorities can grant permits for the removal of truffles of the genus Tuber for purely scientific purposes, e.g. for mapping, proof of biodiversity, and insights into the health of the forests, so that with such a permit the truffles of the genus Tuber may also be collected in the area specified therein.

      The famous             Red List It has no legal effect. It is drawn up by experts and provides a recommendation on which animal, plant, and fungal species should be protected. This can vary from state to state.
    • All other truffles, which are not Belonging to the genus Tuber, they may be sought, found and collected for private purposes.
      In Germany, 250-300 species (hypogees) are estimated to exist. The genus Tuber comprises approximately 30 species. Thus, the world of "legitimate truffle hunting" is enormous. And among the "permitted" species, there are also truffle varieties that are very aromatic and flavorful. This is a note for those primarily interested in culinary purposes.

    • The ban on collecting truffles of the genus Tuber applies exclusively to wild populationsAre the truffles intentionally cultivated (Plantations, Agor forest, garden, Mycoforest,...), the prohibition applies NOT!
